Introduction
As urbanization accelerates, cities are emerging as hubs of economic growth and technological innovation but are simultaneously burdened with energy consumption and ecological degradation. Cities currently account for 70% of global energy use and exert considerable pressure on environmental ecosystems. This imbalance not only exacerbates pollution and climate change but also triggers governance challenges across urban spaces.1
The solution to many of these challenges lies in optimizing resource efficiency through innovative technologies. A critical starting point is urban infrastructure—particularly street lighting—which offers cities a tangible opportunity to reduce energy consumption by half through the adoption of smart lighting technologies. At the heart of this transformation lies the concept of the “smart pole” – a next-generation, multifunctional device embedded with Internet of Things (IoT) capabilities.
